We invite proposals for presentations at the 36th conference of the European Second Language Association, EuroSLA 36, to be held in Ghent, Belgium, 30 June – 3 July 2027. The conference is organized by the Departments of Linguistics and of Translation, Interpreting, and Communication, and the GLLAS research group of Ghent University.

Types of presentations
We welcome submissions in all areas and approaches to the study of second, foreign, or additional languages, as well as bilingualism and multilingualism.
Individual papers
Each presentation will be allocated 20 minutes, followed by a 5-minute Q&A
Posters
All posters should be printed on A0 format in portrait layout
Doctoral workshop papers
Each presentation will be allocated 15 minutes, followed by a 10-minute feedback and discussion session led by a senior discussant. The Doctoral Student Workshop is intended for PhD students to present ongoing research and receive feedback from senior researchers and fellow doctoral students. The workshop provides an opportunity for PhD students to discuss work in progress, including research questions, theoretical or methodological approaches, preliminary ideas, and future directions, rather than completed studies or projects. Doctoral students whose abstracts are accepted are required to send their abstract, presentation, and up to 3 specific questions to the senior discussant at least 10 days ahead of the conference.
Abstract submission information
Abstracts must be submitted in English via SoftConf.
Please note that you will have to create a SoftConf account to be able to submit your abstract.
- Deadline for submission: December 5, 2026
- Notification of acceptance: February 25, 2027
- Length of abstracts: 500 words max. (all-inclusive)
- Number of submissions: You may be included as an author on up to three abstracts in total. Of these, you may be the lead author of only one abstract.
When submitting your abstract, you will be asked to choose one of the following options:
- Doctoral workshop presentation
- Poster only
- Paper only
- Paper or poster presentation
As the number of oral presentation slots is limited, we particularly encourage poster submissions. Poster sessions provide an excellent opportunity for informal, in-depth discussion and exchange with colleagues.
Evaluation of abstracts
All proposals will be evaluated anonymously by three members of the EuroSLA 36 Scientific Committee.
For papers and posters, evaluation criteria include:
- Theoretical underpinning and quality of the research design
- Organization and clarity of the abstract
- Originality and significance of the contribution to the field
- Methodological rigour
For the doctoral workshop, evaluation criteria further include:
- Relevance to the workshop audience
- State of completion, with preference for work in progress that can benefit from feedback
- Methodological rigour and provision of sufficient information (about participants, materials, procedures, analyses, etc.) for a constructive discussion
Language policy
The working language of the conference is English, but presentations are also welcome in other European languages.
Student stipends
A limited number of student stipends, in the form of registration fee waivers, will be available for doctoral students. If you wish to apply, please send the following information to eurosla36@ugent.be by December 5, 2026:
- Name, institution, and address of the institution
- Official confirmation of PhD student status (e.g., certificate of enrolment)
- Statement from supervisor or Head of department that the applicant’s institution cannot (fully) cover the conference-related expenses.
The stipends will be awarded based on the quality of the accepted abstract and the financial need of the applicant, as reflected in the supporting documentation. Please note that applicants who have already received such stipend in the past are not eligible to reapply.
Junior Researcher LAB Award
The journal Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism will award the Junior Researcher LAB Award to the most promising PhD project presented at the doctoral workshop. The award includes a prize of €300. Click here for further details about the award and application procedure.
